"SHARING HOPE THROUGH SCRIPTURE ABOUT WHAT GOD IS AND WHAT GOD DOES FOR HIS PEOPLE"
Psalm 84:11 “For the LORD God is a sun and shield; The LORD will give grace and glory; No good thing will He withhold From those who walk uprightly.”
Psalm 84:12 “O LORD of hosts, Blessed is the man who trusts in You!”
(Taken from today's reading in The One Year Bible 10/14/14)
Some explanatory thoughts, application, questions, and a prayer:
This Psalm is said to be by the Son's of Korah. And it's a Psalm filled with praise, describing the blessings of knowing the Lord and walking with the Lord, and how wonderful it is to know Him. The Psalm ends with these two verses that speak of what the Lord is and what He will do for the man who puts his trust in Him.
1. Our God is a Sun and shield for us.
Psalm 84:11 “For the LORD God is a sun and shield; The LORD will give grace and glory; No good thing will He withhold From those who walk uprightly.”
This verse begins by telling us what God is for us.
We know that He is for us.
But here is what He does for us.
Or who He is for us.
He is our Sun and shield.
Or to put it another way, He is our light and our protector.
We need light, and we need protection.
God is both of these for His people.
We do not need to walk in darkness.
Nor do we need to live without Divine protection.
2. The LORD will give us grace and glory.
Psalm 84:11 “For the LORD God is a sun and shield; The LORD will give grace and glory; No good thing will He withhold From those who walk uprightly.”
Having told us what God is for us, now we are told what He will give to us.
He gives us grace and glory.
Grace is the unmerited, or undeserved favor of God.
Glory is a little harder to describe and understand.
But, we will one day behold His glory.
And we will one day share in His glory.
He will give us glorified bodies, just like His is today.
Glory is in my mind the sum visible total of all His attributes.
His justice, mercy, grace, power, love, joy, truth, righteousness, eternal nature, and every other thing that is told us about God in the Bible.
He will give all of this to us one day,.
We will behold His glory forever and ever.
3. No good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly.
Psalm 84:11 “For the LORD God is a sun and shield; The LORD will give grace and glory; No good thing will He withhold From those who walk uprightly.”
This is a promise from God for His people.
It speaks to what He will not do.
He will not withhold any good thing from those who walk uprightly.
To walk uprightly, is to do what is right.
God promises not to withhold any good thing from us.
We have more good things coming our way than we can imagine.
God has promised this to us.
May we live and do what is right in His sight.
4. Blessed is the man who trusts in God.
Psalm 84:12 “O LORD of hosts, Blessed is the man who trusts in You!”
This last verse now brings man directly into the picture.
The people of God are promised something here.
This verse seems to be a prayer for God's people and a promise for God's people.
May the LORD of hosts (all the angels) is the idea.
Here's the promise.
Blessed is the man who trust in You.
Or happy are the people who trust in You.
Isn't this true.
Some Questions:
1. Have you found these truths about God to be true in your life up to this point?
2. Isn't is a blessing indeed that God would give us light and protection?
3. Don't we need both of these?
4. Do you need grace, do you need some good thing from the Lord?
5. Will you believe Him to give them to You, for He has promised to do so.
6. Have you found the joy and happiness of truly trusting in God?
A Prayer:
Father, who does not love the Psalms? And who has not found an endless comfort and blessing in reading them, and meditating on them.
You have been so gracious to give us these 150 Psalms that seem to speak to every area of our lives. They give us direction, the give us proper warnings, they tell us what lies ahead, and they tell us who You are and what You promise to do for Your people, and what You will do to the wicked and those who do not believe You. We pray for our own faith to grow, and we pray for those we know who do not yet know You, that they would soon come to faith, and begin to enjoy the blessings of being Your children. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
